Building a Rubrics

What is the is the first thing you need to do when building a rubric?

A.) Develop a grid. 
B.) Choose the criteria to be evaluated.
C.) Determine concepts to be learned.




Developing a rubric grid using Word. 

To begin:

1. Open Word
2. Click on Insert ➢ Table
3. Create a table 6 columns x 5 rows

To ensure you are creating the table correctly, answer the following question:


When creating the table what do you have to choose first? 

A.) The number of columns 

B.) The number of rows


4. Label the top row with the following headings

  • SCORING
  • DISTINGUISHED
  • PROFICIENT
  • BASIC
  • BELOW EXPECTATIONS
  • NON-PERFORMANCE


Does your Rubric Grid look like the image below?




A.) Yes

B.) No

5. Under the SCORING Column type the following

  • Critical Thinking Skills/Original Thoughts - 25%
  • Content/ Subject Knowledge - 25%
  • Participation - 25%
  • Coherence & Organization - 20%
  • Mechanics - 10%

Does your Rubric Grid look like the image below?




A.) Yes

B.) No

6. Determine what the student needs to produce to be given a rating of: Distinguished, Proficient, Basic, Below Expectations, and Non-Performance.
